Over 35 Years of Progress
Glebe Youth Service (GYS) was created in response to the recognised lack of support and opportunity for young people in Glebe.
In 1984 local residents and community groups secured funding and purchased equipment to run holiday programs with the objective to establish a youth centre. In 1989 the NSW Department of Housing allocated a property for a youth centre where volunteers provided drop-in services and holiday programs, and in 1992 Glebe Youth Service was formerly incorporated. Over the following years, Glebe Youth Service continued to grow its range of services supporting and listening to the young people of Glebe, and today offers an extensive range of programs for children, young people, and families helping them reach their full potential, achieve their goals and contribute positively to their community.
In November 2025, the members decided that GYS would become an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO). This involved a change to the Constitution, a majority of the Management Committee being First Nations and the appointment of an Aboriginal CEO.
GYS continues to deliver programs and support to all youth and families in Glebe and beyond.
