GYS Newsletter: October 2020

GYS has been busy supporting the Glebe Community over the last few months.

Read below about what we have been up to, and what’s coming up next!

Aunty Kathryn Farrawell’s Mural for GYS

One of the highlights of the past few months has been the creation of an incredible mural at GYS’s ‘Teen Space’, thanks to a local artist and elder, Aunty Kathryn Farrawell who involved many community members and young people in the creative process. The room-sized artwork features Glebe icons like photographer Aunty Barbara McGrady. It also features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legends, including Archie Roach, Patty Millslus, Adam Goodes and Cathy Freeman.

Many local young people and identities have left their mark on the mural. We are so looking forward to sharing this wonderful mural with you, Aunty Kathryn said about the mural “..we wanted the community to be involved…and it is about community first and coming together at the youthie and that is really important…” Aunty Kathryn Farrawell

Teen Time is Back!

After a short break, Teen Time welcomes back our young people to a safe place to connect!
With a strong COVID Safe Plan, teens can connect with our youth and social workers to set goals for their future.

At Teen Time, there is a focus on skills for the future. This can be completing the HSC, applying for jobs, resume writing and thinking about life after school. The current focus is engaging while at the same time helping teens learn new skills while getting information advice and referrals. Quotes- Habil and teen **

Work in progress!

GYS and Mirvac: New Toilets Project

As many of you know, our public toilets have been in need of some attention for a long time. We are delighted to announce that with the support of Broadway Shopping Centre, we are getting brand new toilets!  This is being led by Justine Saltmarsh, Centre Manager for Mirvac Retail and her amazing team.  Keiran is so grateful, saying “This project will give our facilities a much-needed boost. We want our young people, families and community members to feel pride and dignity, and this toilet renovation will do just that.   We are delighted to be working with Broadway Shopping Centre and cannot thank them enough”

Justine has always been a great supporter of GYS, and says “We are really excited and proud to be delivering a much needed refurbishment of the GYS bathrooms for the local community. We recognise the invaluable service GYS provides, and we wanted to support this great work in a real and tangible way. The bathrooms were in real need of a makeover and with the support of our contractor partners we’re looking forward to delivering these new facilities in the coming weeks.”   Thank you Justine and Mirvac! Watch this space for the final beautiful result.

‘Enjoy Glebe’ Mural gets a facelift

In 2008 local young people from Glebe Youth Service created the Enjoy Glebe Mural on Mitchell St. Riffing off the globally recognised ‘Enjoy Coke’ design, this mural immediately gained widespread attention locally and afar. Stuart Barber the originally artist youth worker created the design and guided local youth to complete the project. Many Glebe organisations have ‘borrowed’ images of the mural for their websites, social media and Glebe Public School even put ‘Enjoy Glebe’ on T-shirts.  Now that the mural is nearly 12 years old, GYS to restore and refresh this local icon.

On Saturday Oct 10, GYS and local young people and community elders came together to restore the mural to its former glory. The work was guided by youth worker and community artist Ben Compton and around 50 community members dropped in to have a paint and to enjoy connecting with others from Glebe community. It was so great to have the community together and we think the mural looks amazing!

Spotlight on a Volunteer:  Kasper Ewenson

A bit about you? I’m a second year med student at USyd with RPA as my clinical school. I came to Sydney from Melbourne last year to study.

How long have you been with GYS and what do you do? About a year and a half, volunteering for drop-in sessions, like teen time and the food circle program.

What do you enjoy about the work you do? I enjoy chatting, working, and hanging out with everyone. It feels like we’re all part of a big community and like we’re all contributing to the good stuff that GYS creates.

What’s been the best moment of the last 12 months for you at GYS? The special moments for me were probably each time I met someone for the first time at GYS. That’s because the nature of GYS is that you’ll probably both be back and get to know each other over time, rather than meet them once and then never see them again. So all those little first introductions with all the people that are involved with GYS are the best moments for me.

What is the strangest talent you have? Sometimes they let us medical students help in the surgeries at the hospital by holding organs out the way and things like that. Apparently I’m better than expected at holding intestines away from the liver. Can’t say that’s a particularly useful talent but it sure is weird.

GYS relies on the generous support of our donors to support the community in Glebe. Please use the button below if you would like to make a donation to help our services continue during this challenging time.
